Our commitment
Vance Killen Interior Design is committed to making vancekillen.com usable by as many people as possible, including people who browse with screen readers, keyboard navigation, screen magnification, or other assistive technology.
Accessibility is not a one-time project for us. We treat it as ongoing work, and we welcome being told when we fall short.
Conformance status
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements for making web content more accessible. They have three levels: A, AA, and AAA.
This website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. "Partially conformant" means most of the standard has been met, and the areas that have not are described below.
What we have done
Recent work on this site has included:
Text contrast. Body text and headings were reviewed against their backgrounds and darkened so that text meets the 4.5:1 minimum contrast ratio required at Level AA.
Image alternatives. Descriptive alternative text has been added to images throughout the site so that people using screen readers receive a meaningful description rather than silence. For banner and gallery images, where our platform builds the alternative text from the image file name, the files were renamed with descriptive names and re-uploaded. Each was then checked with a screen reader to confirm the description is announced correctly.
Keyboard navigation. The site has been tested using only a keyboard to confirm that content can be reached and navigated without a mouse.
Assistive technology testing. Pages have been reviewed with a screen reader to check that content is announced in a sensible order and that headings and links make sense out of context.
Document structure. Headings are used in a logical hierarchy so that assistive technology users can navigate by section rather than reading every page start to finish.
Known limitations
We want to be straightforward about where this site still falls short. As of the review date above, we are aware of the following:
Banner and gallery image descriptions. For banner and gallery images, our platform builds the alternative text from the image file name rather than from a separate description field. We have written descriptive file names and confirmed they are announced correctly, but file names cannot carry punctuation or full sentences, so these descriptions are necessarily shorter and plainer than the ones elsewhere on the site.
Portfolio photography. Interior photography is difficult to describe fully in a short text alternative. Our descriptions convey the subject and character of a space, but they cannot capture everything a sighted visitor sees.
Third-party content. Content we embed or link to from other providers is outside our control, and we cannot guarantee it meets the same standard.
Platform limitations. Some aspects of the site's underlying code are generated by our website platform and cannot be modified by us directly.
We are working to reduce this list. If something here is blocking you, please tell us and we will help you get what you need another way.
How this site was evaluated
This site was assessed by Approach IT using a combination of methods:
Automated accessibility scanning using axe DevTools and VoiceOver
Manual keyboard-only navigation testing
Manual review with the NVDA screen reader
Manual colour contrast measurement against WCAG 2.1 Level AA thresholds
Automated tools alone catch only a portion of accessibility issues, which is why manual testing was included.
Technical information
Accessibility on this site depends on the following technologies: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The site is built on the Squarespace platform.
